Biography

Jeanne de Toucy was the only child of Emma de Laval, dame de Laval and her third husband Jean de Toucy, and was the heir of her father. She married Thibaut II, comte de Bar-le-Duc.^[1]

Birth date

Her birth date is unknown, but her parents probably married in 1231; her mother's second husband, Mathieu II de Montmorency died 24 November 1230^[2] and a act dated to 1231 from Jean de Toucy, names Emma as his wife - "Joannes, dominus de Toceio ... uxorem Emmam, comitissam de Alenchon et dominam de Lavalle."^[3]

Given Emma's first child, Robert IV d'Montgomerie, Comte d' Alencon, was born in 1217/1218^[4] Cawley, thinks Jeanne would have been born fairly soon after the marriage, circa 1232-1240.^[5]

As Jeanne's mother had lands of her own, both as part of her inheritance of Laval, and probably as dower from her previous two marriages, there seems to be no reason to assume Jeanne was born at Toucy.

Marriage date

Just as Jeanne's birth date is unknown, so also is her marriage date. Thibaut II, comte de Bar-le-Duc had been married previously (betrothed 3 May 1243), to Jeanne de Dampierre, widow of Hugues III, Comte de Rethel and Cawley estimates she died in 1245/1246, and the marriage with Jeanne de Toucy took place soon afterwards, but there are no sources to indicate why he thinks Jeanne de Dampierre died soon after her marriage.^[6]
